How Ray Chooses

Transparency builds trust. Here's exactly how we create our recommendations.

The Honest Truth

I don't own every cologne I recommend. That would require thousands of dollars and a dedicated room for bottles. Instead, I do something I believe is more valuable: I aggregate and synthesize expert opinion.

Think of me as your research friend. I spend hours reading expert reviews, watching YouTube comparisons, analyzing community discussions, and distilling it all into clear recommendations you can trust.

My Research Process

1

Expert Review Analysis

I study reviews from trusted gold prospecting equipment reviewers and experienced prospectors, prioritizing sources with genuine field time and transparent testing methodology.

2

Community Consensus

I monitor Reddit (r/goldprospecting, r/metaldetecting), Minelab Community forums, Detect-Ed community to understand what real users experience over time. Marketing specs don't survive months of community discussion in real mineralized ground.

3

Cross-Reference & Verify

When multiple independent sources agree on a detector's performance in a specific terrain type, I have confidence. When they disagree, I investigate why and present the nuance.

4

US Market Validation

I verify availability and pricing for US buyers. Pricing, availability, and Amazon stock levels are checked before recommendations go live.

Sources I Trust

Not all reviews are equal. I weight sources based on expertise, transparency, and track record.

Tier 1: Primary Sources

Expert reviewers with demonstrated expertise, transparent methodology, and significant following.

  • Minelab Product Reviews (YouTube / Minelab Community) - Manufacturer field testing and authorised dealer demos with real performance data
  • Garrett Metal Detectors (YouTube / Garrett Academy) - Comprehensive detector education from the manufacturer — terrain-specific guidance
  • Nugget Shooter (Bill Southern) (YouTube) - Decades of Arizona desert prospecting — highly trusted for PI detector field performance
  • Detect-Ed (YouTube / Forum) - Technical detector reviews with mineralization testing — Australian gold country overlap

Tier 2: Community Sources

Community consensus and specialist forums where real users share long-term experiences.

  • r/goldprospecting (Reddit) - 60k+ members sharing real finds, terrain tips, and gear feedback across US locations
  • r/metaldetecting (Reddit) - Broad detector community — useful for VLF comparisons and real-world target ID experience
  • Minelab Community Forums (Forum) - Detector-specific technical discussion, firmware updates, and terrain advice from experienced users
  • GPAA Forums (Forum) - Gold Prospectors Association of America — location intel and gear discussion from active claim holders

Tier 3: Supporting Sources

Aggregated user reviews and manufacturer specifications for verification.

  • Amazon Reviews - 4+ stars with 200+ reviews, verified purchase prioritised — useful for durability and reliability signals
  • Manufacturer Specifications - Operating frequency, coil size, waterproofing rating, weight — for accuracy verification
  • USGS Gold Maps - Historical gold deposit data used to verify prospecting viability of recommended locations

What I Don't Do

  • Claim to have "tested" products I haven't physically used
  • Accept payment to feature or rank products
  • Recommend products just because they have high affiliate commissions
  • Hide our affiliate relationships
  • Present opinions as facts without attribution

About Our Affiliate Links

Yes, I earn commissions when you buy through our links. This is how the site stays running. But here's what matters:

  • I recommend products first, then find affiliate links (not the reverse)
  • Commission rates don't influence rankings
  • I link to the best price, even if it means lower commission
  • I disclose affiliate relationships on every page

Keeping Content Current

The gold prospecting equipment market changes. New products launch, prices shift, community opinion evolves.

  • Major guides: Reviewed quarterly
  • Product availability: Checked monthly
  • Price changes: Links go to retailer for current pricing
  • New product launches: Added when sufficient expert reviews exist
